Hyperconverged clusters grow one node at a time. Each node adds processors, memory and disks together, so there is no new storage array to buy and no forklift migration. Start with a custom footprint of a few rack units, move to a half rack, and expand to a full 42U rack when you need it.
You also choose the platform. Proxmox VE with Ceph is open source, with no per-core licensing. VMware vSAN suits teams standardized on vSphere, and Hyper-V with Storage Spaces Direct fits Microsoft-centric shops.
