What a DDoS attack is.Traffic used as a weapon.
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack floods a target with traffic from many sources at once, often large numbers of compromised devices. The goal is not to steal data. It is to use up bandwidth, connection capacity or server resources so real users cannot reach your services.
Attacks come in a few broad forms. Volumetric attacks try to fill the network link. Protocol attacks exhaust connection tables in firewalls and servers. Application-layer attacks send requests that look legitimate but tie up your web or API tier.
Because the traffic comes from many places at once, blocking a single address rarely works. Protection has to sit upstream of your servers and separate attack traffic from real users before it reaches your cluster.
