Proxmox VE Ceph clusters.Open source, with no per-core licensing.

Proxmox VE Ceph is our recommended hyperconverged platform: Proxmox VE runs your virtual machines with built-in high availability while Ceph pools storage across every node. We build and run it on single-tenant hardware.

Why we recommend Proxmox VE + Ceph.Full control without the license math.

Proxmox VE is an open-source hypervisor, so there is no per-core licensing to track as you add processors. You get full control of the platform and built-in high availability: when a node goes down, its virtual machines restart on the nodes that remain.

Ceph is the storage layer. It pools the HDD, SSD and NVMe tiers in your rack into one storage system that every node reaches over your private switching fabric.

  • No per-core licensing
  • Built-in high availability
  • Open source, with full control of the stack
  • Three nodes is the usual minimum for high availability

How Ceph protects your data.Self-healing storage across nodes.

Three copies

Ceph keeps copies of every block on different nodes, three in total, so one failed node does not take your data offline.

Automatic rebuilds

After a failure, Ceph rebuilds the missing copies on its own, without waiting on a restore from backup.

Tiered storage

HDD, SSD and NVMe tiers are pooled by Ceph, so hot data and capacity data live in the same cluster.

A typical Proxmox VE + Ceph cluster. What goes in the rack.

Minimum size
Three nodes for high availability, often with a backup node and firewall in a custom footprint.
Storage
HDD, SSD and NVMe tiers pooled by Ceph, three copies of every block.
Network
25/100 GbE top-of-rack switches linked to every node, with private VLANs.
Management
Out-of-band remote console and power control on a separate network.
Growth
Add one node at a time. Each node adds processors, memory and disks together.

Questions, answered.

Why choose Proxmox VE over a commercial hypervisor?

No per-core licensing, full control of an open-source stack and built-in high availability. It is our recommended hyperconverged option.

How many copies of my data does Ceph keep?

Three copies of every block, each on a different node. After a failure, Ceph rebuilds the missing copies on its own.

Can you move us from VMware to Proxmox VE?

Yes. We plan and run the migration. A Half Rack is ideal for a VMware exit, with room to grow.

What is the smallest Proxmox VE cluster?

Three nodes is the usual minimum for high availability, often paired with a backup node and firewall in a custom footprint.
